Romanian or foreign company – current market trends

“Demonization” of Romanian capital

The local IT market and other industries continue to have a tendency to “demonize” the Romanian capital, foreign companies in the field often having a better brand image, often the opinion being that they bring a level of know-how and working models of “western” level.

A foreign company may have better employer branding, but this does not always guarantee a higher level of employee satisfaction. Negative examples can also be found among multinationals and foreign companies coming to Romania.

Thorough research work done before making a decision to choose is extremely important. Opportunities, work environment, organizational culture are all factors that differ from one company to another and which, in the end, will affect the total level of satisfaction.

Perspectives for employees

A smaller local company can always compensate by offering much more flexibility and more possibilities in potential crisis situations. Courses and certifications for the employee, a very important issue given the speed with which the industry is evolving today, the possibility of mentoring, can be decisive factors later in the career, and small companies focus on increasing the level for their own talent.

A small company will always focus on developing the set of hard-skills, while a large, multinational company will greatly appreciate the soft skills of an employee, even in the IT field: teamwork, adaptability, communication.

Furthermore, the academic environment does not provide enough IT specialists, and the turnover of IT professionals is significantly higher than in other fields. As well as the extent to which they choose to go abroad. The process of upskilling through internal training is one of the options that works to reduce the lack of quality talent, a problem that many companies complain about.

Market trends

Most of the Millenials generation have higher expectations when it comes to an IT company, both in terms of salary, but also in terms of other benefits, such as private insurance, flexible working hours, trainings and courses offered within the company, especially the possibility to work from home being very appreciated.

On the other hand, there are the HR specialists, who often say that the numerical deficit is accompanied by a low level of skills and that direct recommendation proves to be the best source of talent, the best candidates coming through the recommendations given from colleagues.

Another strong trend in the market at present in trying to reduce the gap between the demand and supply of IT professionals is the proposal of professional retraining for people from other fields of activity, but who prove technical skills and inclination. Through specialized courses and continuing education, a former employee in marketing or finance, for example, could become a solution for an IT recruiter.
